Clinical activities
children and adolescents (0-19 years) are treated at the department.
These patients are referred for specialized dental care from dentists,
physicians and other health care institutes. The number of referrals
has gradually increased to around 1500 annually. Among the patients
referred are children and adolescents with severe medical conditions,
physical and mental disabilities. The panorama of these conditions is
wide and a number of patients suffer multiple disabilities. Other
reasons for referral are patients who suffered dental trauma and
children with dental fear or behavioral management problems. These
children have in general remarkable dental treatment needs.
The
department collaborate nearly with the departments of pediatric
medicine and habilitation at Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Hospital,
child care institutes and child health care in Stockholm County.
Currently,
12 dentists, 15 dental nurses and one secretary work at the department.
The staff has vast experiences in a number of areas such as behavioral
management, sedation techniques and pain control and preventive
dentistry. Advanced and lengthy treatments are conducted under general
anesthesia at Danderyd´s Hospital or Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s
Hospital.
Education
the educational activities are numerous. Four dentists undergo
postgraduate training in pedodontics at the department. Another couple
of dentists undergo similar programs in collaborations with other
counties. Courses and seminars are given regularly to dental personnel
in general practice. Courses to other health care personnel categories
are also provided.
Research and developement
Vivid research activities involve a large number of the staff.
During the passed few years, the focus has been on caries progression,
evaluation of preventive methods, filling materials in primary teeth
and severe complications following dental injuries. During the passed
years, around 30 scientific articles were published.
